“Hmm hmm... ♪ Kirk, my love... <giggle> Still catching up on sleep, are we? That's fine. I'll have some fresh baked cookies ready for you soon. That's ought to get of bed. <giggle>”
—Rachel to Kirk's corpse

Rachel Klein is a minor character from The Mechanical Heart chapter. She is a member of the Cogito Ergo Sum crew and the ship's signaler.

Background[]

Before The Mechanical Heart[]

Rachel became a crew member of the Cogito Ergo Sum and the ship signaler. It's known that she previously had a romantic relationship with Huey before breaking up with him and dating Kirk.

During The Mechanical Heart[]

Rachel is usually found either at her station on the ship's bridge, or with Kirk when both are off duty. After Kirk's death, Rachel's sanity slips, believing that he was actually murdered by Huey out of jealousy. After she's gravely injured by the Behemoth, she's put in a cold-sleep chamber to keep her alive until the ship can reach Earth. However, OD-10 cuts the power to her sleep pod and she dies.

Appearance[]

Rachel wears a red shirt and brown uniform pants along with some harnesses and a belt. Just like the rest of the crew, she wears white boots. She keeps her blonde hair up with a big red bow.

Personality[]

Rachel is very kind to others, especially towards Cube, and is seen hanging around Kirk most of the time. She treats Huey with less respect than other crew members but has a softer spot for Kirk.

After Kirk's death, Rachel begins to lose touch with reality. In denial of his death, she acts strange and labile, to the point of taking Kirk's dead body from the medical bay and back to her quarters, where she tucks his body into her bed and addresses him as though he's still alive. When Kato and the others arrive to understand what she's doing, she accuses Huey of killing Kirk out of jealousy towards their relationship. She later endangers everyone on board by opening the cargo bay door without sealing the airlock, nearly sucking both Kato and Cube out into space.

Rachel's troubles were exacerbated by OD-10. The control AI purposefully leaves a message for her to find on her terminal, further stoking her denial of Kirk's death and her mistrust of Huey and the other crew members. The love triangle between herself, Kirk, and Huey and the actions of all those involved are in part what lead OD-10 to make the decision to kill the Cogito Ergo Sum's crew.
